I so hate to run when we all have such a good time around here, but I really must.

Hubs and I have custody of three of our nephews. One sweet almost-teenager, one precious 3rd grader, and a lovable little scamp of a 3-year-old.

We're going to need a minute (or a million) to get used to the adjustments, so until I have my lists made and my Ts crossed and Is dotted, I'm going to be a little scarce around here.

Say a prayer, would you? For wisdom and hope and victory and healing and all things good. We need those things. ;)

I recently found this shirt at Ross' for $7.49. I threw it on one day to run errands and then spent the next 2 days in it.

It's the cold, hard truth.

I rocked this baby in boot cut jeans, in 10-year-old, ridiculously comfortable athletic capris later for dinner with my hubs (taco pasta, if you must know), and with cuffed skinny jeans the next day when I realized I had to make a run to town and was still half-dressed.

I live a glamorous life.

Also, this shirt is comfortable. ;)

I think the summer heat is starting to bake my brain, because I've already started pulling out cool weather clothing and wearing it. It's my big, bad rebellious statement against the sun and heat and drought and general discomfort. Regardless of the fact that it's been triple digit weather EVERY DAY.

EVERY DAY IN CAPS, just in case you missed that.

This is a winter outfit for me. Monochromatic. Sequins. Booties. Cardigans. Well, just one cardigan per outfit, actually. But you get the picture. Sometimes I wear a jacket, sometimes not.

Sometimes I can't even remember whether or not it's ever been cool enough to wear a jacket because the heat has baked my brain and my feet are sweating like criminals in church in BOOTIES.

But it's cute, though! ;)

Things are a little crazy in our family lately, mostly because of a lack of sleep and a general posessiveness over Oreo cookies.

But also because we have a precious little bundle of joy in the form of my lil' sister's new son, Kingston.

I know. He's already precious and you haven't even seen him, right?

Well, let me fix that for you.

Whew! That week went by quickly.

Since last Friday, where I was dying {almost} of a malicious disease {stomach flu}, I have

1) recovered {by the grace of God, naturally}
2) become an auntie to nephew #4
3) been so uninteresting, I can't even think of a notable 3rd point.

I pulled out a trusty combo for my one shining fashion moment this week, the day Kingston was born. And only because I knew pictures would be taken in mass quantities, and really, how fashion forward would it be of me to pose in an exhausted heap of sweatpants and oversized hoodie when, in fact, I DID NOT GIVE BIRTH?

Considering that my baby sis made delivery look so stinking easy, I really had no excuse but to wear actual clothes. So I compromised on my soft, beaten up, loose jersey blouse. ;)

BTW, I know I've said it before, but seriously? Fitted bottom + loose top IS MY SLOW JAM.

Fashion Sick Friday.

I know, I know.

It's Saturday.

I have impeccable timing, except for not! ;)

What I DO have is a particularly nasty stomach flu, which has made me both unwilling and unable to leave my house. And obviously, that means I haven't been out of my pajamas much, because really, who gets dressed at home?

A far more glamorous wife than I, my husband might think. {But never say, he's much too sweet and classy and I'd kick his tail. ;)}

I had a few unavoidable errands Friday, so I did my best to hide the circles under my eyes, the frizzball 'do, and the chipping paint on my fourth left toenail.

Also, this was clean. ;)

My Little Pet... Peeves.

This post is killin' me today.

And the comments?

I'm DYING to death laughing.

I've talked about my pet peeves before. I've shared them in person, I've blogged about them, I've harped on them a little too much around my loved ones..

Oops. ;)

But it's not easy to be this stinking picky, y'all. I like to say that I have high standards, but my family would probably call it neuroticism.

Some things are just unacceptable, though. Like:

10. People thinking it's okay to eat off of my plate or drink from my cup just because we're on a first name basis. Um, I don't know your medical history. I don't know who you kiss. And I am NOT interested in a bit of friendly cross contamination.

After enduring a few half-eaten dinners with a girl like that (half-eaten because I'm not touching my plate after you've helped yourself to it's contents) I now categorically refuse to have a meal with or near this girl.

I don't mean to be rude, but there are boundaries, y'all. Not that she knows this - the first time she saw my wedding set, she asked if she could try it on for size.

I mean, really? My wedding set? The symbol of my eternal married love? That piece isn't exactly costume jewelry to be borrowed and passed around at will.

But I'm glad you like it, thanks for noticing.

9. Yell-sneezing. Yelleezing, if you will. I understand the need to sneeze, I really do. I know it hits you at random times and you simply must let it out. But don't roar while you sneeze. Bellowing HAAAAAAAAAAAATCHOO is neither productive nor welcomed. It's irritating, so please, expell your sneeze without using your vocal chords, mmmkay?

8. People who work in customer service and clearly wish they didn't - it's your job, homes. YOU ARE BEING PAID to do this. Don't treat me with disrespect or disregard, 'cause it's not my fault.

7. The sheets/blankets covering my feet while I'm sleeping. I cannot be comfortable if my feet are hot. CANNOT.

6. People hovering around - and especially behind - me. Sit your behind down. Don't look over my shoulder, mouth breathing into my ear. Don't stand there nervously when everyone else is perfectly fine sitting. Seriously. Just sit down, you're driving me crazy.

5. Passive agressive people. Honestly, if you have a problem, come out and say it. Say it nicely. Don't pout about it. We'll both be miserable. Just... Own it! On the other hand, I also have this big, giant THING against people who boss hog the internets and pretend to be big shots, saying whatever they choose to whomever they choose. They do it on forums and Facebook and blogs, and it's cowardly, childish, and so, so small.

Stop it, people. You wouldn't be brave enough to say that to someone's face. So stop doing it online.

4. Bad grammar. This includes everything from mispronouncing words [because hello, do you not have access to a dictionary with handy little pronunciation guides beside EVERY WORD?] to incorrect usage of simple, common words like your/you're and their/they're/there, and especially intentionally misspelling words. Especially with numbers. Numbers aren't letters, people.

Th4t 1s l1ke s0 n0t c00l.

3. People blowing their noses in public. Seriously, the sound of snot flying through your nasal cavity is SICKENING. And please, please don't do it when I'm eating. I. Will. Retch.

2. Name dropping.

Really. I don't care who you know or met or saw once on TV.

And my all time, biggest pet peeve?

1. MOUTH NOISES. Smacking, slurping, sucking, chewing, horrid, nasty mouth noises. I don't need to hear your saliva doing it's job. I don't need to experience your food being ground into mush. I know how digestion begins, trust me. I have a system just like yours.

And don't get me started on the ice crunchers. It's too much for me to handle without experiencing severe discomfort.

Instead, I'm going to leave this subject alone and pretend that I didn't just reveal my deep neuroticism to to tens of people who visit me here. ;)

This is an unoriginal outfit week. I totally knocked off an outfit worn by the fab Kendi of Kendi Everyday, but I DID use pieces that I've had longer than I've known my husband or had more than one nephew, so, like, totally FOREVER. ;) That means this counts for Fashion Friday originality, right?

Good.

It started back in high school, when, inexplicably, I had a deep and abiding love for horizontal stripes. No matter that they add 20 pounds. Because, clearly, it DIDN'T matter when I was in high school and could stand the extra poundage. I have several leftover shirts from that time in my life. And multiple black skirts of all shapes, because black skirts CAN DO NO WRONG.

I will say that tucking in a t-shirt isn't the easiest task ever, and I found myself readjusting constantly [I'm picky about weird fabric bunching, what can I say?] but this is a seriously cute look, so it's kind of worth it.

Let it be known that heretofore, I plan to start at least some of my mornings with this yummy, easy peasy recipe for frittata baked in a muffin pan. This is so customizable, y'all - my head is already spinning with visions of sauteed spinach and mushrooms and bell peppers and sundried tomatoes and... You get the general idea.

I'm sure my husband would appreciate my starting those mornings fairly early so he can get in on the goodness, too.

So says the queen. ;)

I bought my little floral cotton dress from Target LITRALLY [Holla if you get the Parks & Rec reference!] ages ago, always loved it, never really wore it. But it's so light and cool that it's my new fave.

You probably won't be surprised to know I've already tried it on with a boyfriend blazer. ;)

Ok, y'all.

I don't normal subscribe to a paranoid, suspicious mentality.

Well, that's almost entirely true. I DO think that Nutella has a pact with the devil to destroy my diet, but that's probably just my sweet tooth talking. ;)

But I was having a conversation with D the other day and a random bolt of curiosity hit me. I ~~interrupted his story~~ waited patiently for my turn to speak and asked him "Do you think that big name companies like Gilette and Schick add hair growth stimulant to their razors?"

Trust me when I say there was NO CONNECTION between our conversation and that random thought. Bless my husband's heart, he is learning to accept random outbursts as just a normal thing I do. So after only about a heartbeat's worth of quizzical stare, he asked me to explain myself.

So I expounded. Or, you know, rambled.

Either way. 'Cause:
1) When I splurge on expensive, made-for-ladies razors [like the Venus] instead of cheap, disposable men's razors [you know, the value pack kind!], I have to shave daily. Not want to - HAVE TO. At least if I want to maintain silky smoothness.

And I DO. I most certainly do, thank you. ;)

2)The ingredients of the 'moisturizing' strip aren't disclosed on the packaging, at least on the Venus Tropical package I 'researched' for roughly 3.2 seconds. So basically, there could be any number of oils and or hormones in the formula and we'd never make the connection between rapid regrowth and our so-helpful moisturizing razors.

3) It stands to reason that companies will make a lot more profit if women are using their razors more frequently. Mo' razors, mo' money. That's what they say back in my hood.

I mean, probably. I never met anyone who said that in my hood, but it could happen.

According to the LiveStrong website, shave gels contain mostly water, because of course, that's what we pay actual money for, a fancy can of pressurized water. ;) Plus emollients to reduce friction, humectants to give your skin a velvety feel, emulsifiers to bind the gel's ingredients together, preservatives to keep the ingredients from molding, propellants, like aerosol, to propel the product out of the can, and "other ingredients" like polyvinylpyrrolidone [also called PVP] to keep the gel from running down your leg.

Nothing in that list screams conspiracy, but if conspiracy screamed, it wouldn't be such a discovery, right?

I'm not sure how much this means to me. I'm not looking for a big expository article to make me famous, and I'm not offended enough to sue. I mean, I'm cool with cheapo razors, honestly. In fact, using the men's value pack razors allows me to shave a few times a week instead of at least once per day, which is basically hope and happiness and all things lovely, plus a rainbow and puppy, for a gal with sensitive skin.

And my legs, they DO TURN ON THE SENSITIVE when I put a razor to them. For real. They're total drama queens. So in terms of friction, less is definitely more comfortable.

What do y'all think? Justified conspiracy? Lunacy, at best? Power to the people? Nutella on whole wheat toast?

Fashion Revamped Friday

This is a variation of my go to outfit - do you have one of those? Ripped jeans [pegged in the summer, skinny in the winter] + shirt + boyfriend blazer. Accessorize and voila!

I'm not letting go of this trend without a fight, BELIEVE YOU ME.

Also, I just need to point out a few things about this outfit, aside from the fact that I probably need to branch out a little bit.

1. This outfit looks REALLY boring when I lay it all out.
2. Color blocking probably isn't my fave. I crave mixed up colors and pop accessories.
3. Turquoise and white make me look tan, which is no small feat, considering I'm currently hovering at my palest shade, somewhere between 'pasty' and 'scary'.
4. I wear heels with jeans a whole lot.
5. I have worn a variation of this outfit with heels, flats, gladiators, wedges, AND boots. Which proves my first point, this is my go-to look.
6. Boyfriend blazers are heaven sent in terms of hip coverage.
7. Boyfriend blazers are not heaven sent in terms of summer overheatedness.

I'll leave you with those gems.

Also, I'm switching up my source lists from now on, ok? :) Since I usually can't find my actual clothes lying about the internets, these items are simply similar to my own, and often, ridiculously expensive. I would NEVER [barring becoming a sudden billionaire] spend $375 on sunglasses, like in last week's outfit, or $500 on a pair of gladiators similar to my white ones purchased from Target for less than $20. SO - if you really love an item, I'm providing the links, but without all the fanfare, because, really, this is about putting together an outfit, not spending preposterous amounts of money on something that so quickly fades.

I'm kind of a hair fanatic.

Ew, that sounded weird.

Let me clarify that statement. I'm not secretly harboring a crazy hair fetish, I'm just really, really picky about my hair. I deliberate for weeks over color changes, research shampoos and conditioners with passionate commitment to quality, and spend too much time watching youtube tutorials on hairstyling.

I used to hire out to do hair for formal events, too, but after a few questionable experiences, I decided that my hair passion doesn't extend to the heads of strangers, especially since I can't personally vouch for everyone's grooming habits. I've touched some nasty hair in my time, and I decided to give it up instead of wearing gloves the whole time, because RUDE.

Now I just do my own hair for fun.

And look at youtube videos about hair, too, but I think we've established that.

I've done a whole lot of heat damage to my hair, between rolling it, flat ironing it, and blow drying it. So I'm trying a few different ways to curl my hair into submission without heat. My hair is naturally curly, but I'm not keen on my natural curl. I prefer a loose, beachy wave.

Here's what I've found so far.. Anyone have another method worth trying? If you have any tricks that work for you, do feel free to help a sister out and share the hair love. :)

This is my second pair of shorts ever.

My first pair, very similar to these (think extra long, full coverage - especially for my short legs!) and in a dusty pink color, still hang in my closet with tags. I bought them for summer (it heats up to about a million degrees here, in case you were wondering) but I was never brave enough to wear them.

When D and I took a quick weekend trip for my birthday, I decided to take the plunge. After all, I don't know anyone in that town, D already loves me, and I had nothing to lose.

I pulled and tugged on these babies a whole day - safe to say I'm not adjusted to wearing shorts, and probably won't be - it's not my thing.

This outfit is still cute, though. I have a cute khaki pleated a-line skirt I'm dying to try it with next!

Let Us Spray.

Do you spray tan?

I do, and I'm kind of mixed about the whole thing. I feel great the day after, and sometimes, for several days after, but you know what they say... Nothing lasts forever!

Except pictures that you upload to the internets, all you kiddos with too much internet time and technology on your hands, EXCEPT THOSE. Those can never be deleted.

Also, the love of God. It lasts forever.

But not spray tans. They do NOT. No matter how carefully I exfoliate before, moisturize after, and spray every evening before bed with my little aerosol spray tan can from the drugstore.

And it's pricey, especially in our small town, where there is all of ONE Mystic tanning booth.

And not much else. Except cows and rednecks, y'all. Cows and rednecks.

I'm curious, though - is it really safer than tanning beds to spray chemicals on oneself? I haven't seen much research, aside from all the headlines screaming TANNING BEDS KILL BABIES and things of that inflammatory nature. But the chemicals can't be good, either, right?

I'm so confused. And pale, so I need answers soon. I guess I'll be hitting up the Googles hardcore for the next 37 seconds.

Time sure flies when you have birthdays and holidays and baby showers and vacations and nephews spending summer visits - and you notice that you really need to blog but you'll wait until you get a chance to sit down at the computer without interruption or you're hit by random inspiration or both of those occur simultaneously.

I'm just saying.

I'll be back in the bloggy saddle soon, I promise, especially since I have ALL KINDS of things to talk about. And all kinds of things I've read on the internets that I simply must share.

Way to stick with a tradition, I know.

I would say that I was far too busy with my VERY EXCITING life to make sure ye olde blog kept posting for me, but that'd be false.

Let's talk more about cameras!

More specifically, phone cameras. Can I just say I love technology? 'Cause WOW. We can make our gadgets and gizmos do ANYTHING nowadays.

And I'm trying to do better about picture-taking, honest, I am.

It's a whole lot easier with sweet nephew Ray around, too, because he's so stinking adorable, I can't help but take pictures of everything he does/wears.

See? Told you. That kid is cute. And yes, I might be a little biased. ;)

I also find lots of reasons to take pictures of this cutie, too:

I'm always on the lookout for good camera/filter apps, and recently found Instagr.am. So far, I am LOVING it. In honor of my list fetish, I'm going to tell you just how much I love it in list form.

1. The filters are high quality. When you apply one to your photo, it looks WAY better than a typical cell phone snap.

2. It's free. 'Nuff said.

3. It has several ways to share individual photos, including Twitter and Facebook, which my family loves, because they get to see all my snaps immediately.

4. It's really simple to use - you don't need to be a genius to figure it out.

5. Have I mentioned that it's FREE? Because that part rocks!

But there's a few things I'd love to change about it.

In list form, of course.

1. There's no easy way to see your photos in an online feed - in fact, it's pretty near impossible to find your photos, to, say, link to your blog. I did a little digging [or, you know, spent 30 seconds on the Googles] and found Extragram, which neatly pulls your Instagram feed onto a website for you, but still - it might be nice to access a feed.

Although I will say that knowing it's so difficult for ME to find my own photos makes me feel a little better about anyone else searching/stalking my feed.

SO... Having it as an option is nice. But maybe it could be a little easier to choose.

Just sayin'.

2. There are only 11 filters. And several of them are very, very similar. Honestly, I would be willing to pay a little [but don't kill me here] for extra high-quality filters like the ones already included, but they aren't yet available. And that kind of stinks. ;)

Honestly, the pros far outweigh the cons. I love this app - I'd easily give it a 4.5 out of 5. And nobody paid me to say that, even! :)

Anyone found any better apps for photo manipulation?

We may ~~be crazy, die-hard fans~~ have a little love in our hearts for the San Antonio Spurs, I'm just sayin'.

Although we're out of the playoffs and our dreams have been crushed to smithereens ONCE AGAIN [come on, guys, GET US A RING!] we do have proof that earlier in the season, there were happy times.

Hopeful times.

Times where we saw a championship in our 2011 future.

Also, we got a good deal on tickets over New Year's weekend, which happens to be little sister's birthday.

So we went. And with 4 picture-taking cell phones and 2 digital cameras among us, we walked away with not a single picture of our own, because we are just that AWESOME AT CAPTURING A MOMENT.

I blame it entirely on the game. ;)

Anyway, we did have the option of the professional photo taken of us at the entrance to the normal seats [we went nosebleed section, ballin' on a budget and all] but none of us were willing to pay $49.99 to download it.

Then I realized that I can count on one hand the photos that have been taken of my husband and I. And it's our first year of marriage. And I'm about to highlight my hair, so it's almost like I never even HAD dark brown hair courtesy of my awesome hairstylist [holla!].

So I embarked unknowingly on a 3-month-long battle to give these people my money.

Y'all.

I have NEVER dealt with a retail organization so dead set on NOT SELLING THEIR PRODUCT. It took me 3 months, 2 payments, coupons, and countless emails to get this photo.

My advice? USE YOUR OWN CAMERA.

Dangerous Curves.

Our society swings wildly between a 'love your body' ideal and a pervasive conviction that a slender, nubile body is the sum of perfection.

And it's unhealthy.

I recently started a diet again. I'm not gonna lie, I've gained more than my fair share of weight in the past year and a half, living off of McDoubles like I thought my hips wouldn't notice.

FALSE. That did not happen. They totally noticed.

But as much as I hate being out of shape, I can't help but feel angered when I read items like this article from Yahoo, highlighting the fact that overweight women are discriminated against more than any other group. Social commentators are now recognizing the fact that people judge overweight women more harshly than other groups considered 'minority groups' because overweight people should be able to control their weight problems.

Don't get me wrong. Backing away from the ho-hos and ding-dongs and actively pursuing physical health is ALWAYS a good idea, and there is much to be said for controlling one's urges to indulge in gluttony. After all, gluttony is listed in the Bible as a sin. Clearly, God has an opinion on self control.

But is it really fair for overweight people to command lower wages than everyone else?

Furthermore, is it really fair to ban overweight people from public establishments, like this club in London or this nail salon in Georgia?

Or worse, is it really okay for healthcare providers to discriminate against heavy people? Is there an excuse for any doctor to say it's 'not worth it' to treat overweight people? Obese people are most likely to be misdiagnosed, given inappropriate dosages, or untreated for diseases like cancer - until the cancer is untreatable.

Christians are taught to 'love the sinner, hate the sin'. It's a precept as firm and established as the knowledge that God is love. People of ALL shapes and sizes are deserving of His love, His grace, and His blessings. A person's stumble over controlling an unhealthy eating habit doesn't mean that he or she is less moral, less honorable, or less worthy.

Bad habits can easily cross into sin territory. But not every habit has consequences that become visible to others, and that's where our society tends to blur the lines between what IS right, and what LOOKS right, just like Christians tend to judge sins with obvious consequences more harshly.

Is it better to be a slender, cocaine addicted, anorexic woman? Or an overweight woman?

Is it better to secretly struggle with porn, or to have sex with multiple partners and become pregnant?

Everyone faces struggles. No one person is so good that he or she doesn't have need of grace. Does that mean that everything is okay, as long as we all admit our equality? Not at all. Grace isn't an excuse to quit the battle. It's a reason to keep fighting.

And it's a reminder that NO ONE has the right to cast the first stone.

I Went To The Goodwills..

Remember when you were younger and car rides consisted of games like 'I went to the store and bought.. ' in alphabetical order?

....Wait, that wasn't just me, right? ;)

We all know how much I love cheap things, but have I mentioned lately how deep runs the love in my heart for thrift stores? HAVE I? Because let's just say, a love that deep and true is rare.

That might be why I just HAPPENED to be in Goodwill the other day and just HAPPENED to find some great fiesta service pieces for a few dollars and a whole set of huge black and white decorative pillows for our brand-new bed and, and, and....

After I bought a backseat's worth of things we absolutely need for our house we don't yet have, lovingly wrapped it, and packed it into our bursting-at-the-seams storage unit, I realized that I really should have taken pictures like a good blogger, but that would have made far too much sense.

Since I'm on a spending freeze because we have neither the space nor the house to decorate, I'm trying to be good. HOWEVER, nothing shall separate me from the love of Goodwills, so in lieu of buying more awesome stuff we don't need, I decided to shop for YOU.

I know. Benevolent of me, right?

Here's a few things I WOULD have purchased if I had the room - but that COULD be yours, you know, if you live in town and have need of them. ;)

You may or may not be able to see the Greek key motif carved into the center panel of this chair back, but it is a HUGE component in current decor circles. Trust me - you need a little Greek key pattern in your life to be hip these days. This chair was part of a set of 6 and priced at $6.99.

I like the color of the wood, but I can also imagine this chair in white - either way, I think it would pair well with a blue and white trellis-patterned seat.

And where else can you find a set of 6 dining chairs for less than $50?

NOWHERE, that's where.

These little ice cream cups are darling. The set obviously started life as a 5-piece service, but lost one along the way. But really, how many times do you need to serve ice cream in adorable little cups like these to more than 4 people at a time? It was priced at $1.99. I wanted it, I 'm not going to lie.

There were 5 of these decanters available. I cannot imagine the volume of alcohol one would consume on average that would make owning 5 matching decanters necessary, but I think it would be so clever to use these for everyday items, like dish soap. Fancy, right? And $.99 each. :)

I pinned a how-to for an adorable necktie-to-necklace DIY that I envisioned this tie being perfect for, but I didn't think I'd actually get it done in a reasonable amount of time, so I left it there. Even though it was only $.25.

It was an exercise in BEING THE BIGGER PERSON.

I may or may not be photo shopping [haha! that would be the thrift store way, not the Adobe way] a lot more in the future, because it's almost as satisfying as buying the things I see and a lot better for my marriage. ;)

Sweeter'n Yogurt Pie!

And then you feel supremely satisfied at your genius use of relatively low-calorie ingredients.

And then you enjoy a slice of your pie.

That's the most crucial step, after all.

I don't think king David had this in mind when he talked about the Lord's preserving hand...

Mightynest has a post about additives in our snack foods that boggles the mind - particularly since the additives have already been addressed in other countries by the same companies peddling them in ours.

There's a lot to be said about taking care about what you put into your body, and even more to be said about being mindful of what you're teaching your kids - or doing to them, in terms of the effects of these products.

I'm no conspiracy theorist [I don't think little ol' me is important enough in the grand scheme of things to have Big Brother checking me out on a daily basis] but I do know marketing. And I know bottom line and profits and cutting corners on quality to inflate those profits, because I've seen it happen up close and personal like.

Somebody has to kick these retailers in the seat before they'll listen. A lot of somebodies. Enough somebodies that their bottom line [teehee!] is affected and change occurs.

A Royal To-Do.

It was all over the news for weeks. Every morning, while I worked out, the tiny, flickering tvs in front of each treadmill buzzed with speculation and commentaries on the royal family.

You don't have to imagine how OVER IT I was, especially after a non-stop weekend of reviews of The Dress.

I even tweeted my irritation Friday morning as the shindig was in full swing - that I wish them all the happiness in the world, truly, but I'm not British [although I've been thisclose to moving to the UK for forever and ever, so there's that] and I'm really uncomfortable with all this coverage of a wedding when things like massive flooding, wildfires, and drought are happening a little closer to home.

Then I clicked over to my favorite online newspaper, which happens to be London-based. Then I saw the dress from every angle. And the guests in their finery. And carriages and vintage cars and lovely flowers and cake, and my romantic little heart did a double beat.

Ahh, love.

Speaking of love, can a sister just admire the fire out of Katherine/Kate's look? GORGEOUS. Simple, elegant, modest without being prudish or hideous, the dress was a dream. Her makeup? Perfect. Glowing. She did it herself, which makes her that much more likeable. The hair? Oh, let's just say I'm youtubing 'flowing locks tutorials' this week.

And we'll leave it at that.

I'm funny about weddings. I think that they're intensely personal - or should be, anyway. A wedding is the ceremonial upheaval of two lives. Two people pledging to EACH OTHER before God that they wil love, honor, and cherish. Not to their friends, not to their community, and certainly not to the world. On the day your life changes completely, the last thing you need is the eyes of everyone on the planet on YOU. I mean, pressure much?

[I don't just say that because D and I had a family-only wedding, truly, I feel like it's a sacred, private moment.]

I'm also funny about hero worship. See, as quaint and lovely as the royal family is, I don't admire them because of their bloodlines. Heroes, to me, are the ones who show selfless bravery under pressure. Not the ones who are rich or born to palaces and titles.

So in theory, I'm not really a royal wedding fan. But in practice, you'd better believe I'm checking out the pictures and tutorials and blog posts.

One of my friends said this about the wedding: 'girls should learn from Kate two things: be friends with your man before you jump into a relationship. Get to know him. And don't marry him until he makes you feel like you're his princess.'

And that? That, I can definitely throw some rice at.

Literally.

My [no boys allowed] gym has a sauna that I've been trying to acclimate myself to - and I have to say, even though I know with my brain that saunas are AWESOME for water weight and flushing out toxins, with my hide, I HATE THE THING. Really, really, really hate it.

It's not so much the older ladies who think that clothing is optional [even though I have to say, I expected a little more from ladies. I've heard of locker rooms, but... Really?] because I can shut my eyes. I cannot, however, shut my pores.

Here's the deal - ladies, according to certain genteel folk I grew up around, do not sweat. Ladies 'glow'. Or 'perspire'. Or 'shine'. They do not sweat, and they are never funky. They wouldn't even think about being rank in public.

But this sauna business takes the sparkles right out of a gal. It's rank and funky and feels like the rainforest. Or summer camp in east Texas. Either one works.

I know it's doing me some good to perspire away every ounce of water I've consumed that morning, but I have to say, it's one of my least favorite things. Right down there with bitter coffee and bagpipes.

But an extra -2 pounds a week fits right into my weight loss plan, so I'm sticking with it. At least until summer hits us full force, because then there will be no need for a designated sweating room,

Lady or no, it just HAPPENS, y'all.

Happy Monday! I hope that, if you're reading this in the US, you made the deadline for your taxes and won't have to hide from the government in a cave and live off of tinned sardines and day-old bread.

I really have nothing of great value to say today, mostly because morning workouts are KICKING MY REAR. Which is great for my rear but not so much for my tired brain, you know?

I AM going to prove how randomly my brain operates, though. I was recently sharing random song picks on Twitter and thought it might be BRILLIANT to make a playlist for my blogmies.

Brilliant, you understand, is highly subjective. I'm pretty sure you'll agree with me when you see how my brain skipped around artists and genres.

Crazy.

But I prefer 'random'.

For The Love Of Salmon Cakes.

Y'all should know by now that I am SOMEWHAT A FAN of all things food related. It does my pudgy little heart the best kind of good to hunt down new recipes to ~~botch~~ try out on my loving family.

Bonus points if there are pretty pictures to go along with the recipe.

Extra bonus points if the recipe makes me hungry the very second I read it.

That's what happened when I stumbled across this recipe for salmon cakes, which, hello, salmon? AWESOME FOR YOUR BRAIN and stuff. Besides, I am so down with anything that resembles a crab cake.

Clearly, anything fried should be used with moderation, but I feel like the salmon makes this a surefire thing. ;)

SALMON CAKES
{via designer bags and dirty diapers}

- 1 can of pink Alaskan salmon (this will make 4 small cakes)

- 1/2 one white onion, finely diced
- 2 stalks of celery, finely diced
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Canola or olive {my preference} oil to fry cakes in

Drain the can of salmon. Season with salt and pepper. Add onions and celery and toss. Lightly beat egg and add to the mixture. Mix with panko breadcrumbs; add more if needed. Mold into cakes and place on a plate. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to an hour. [This helps bind the cakes so they don't fall apart when you cook them.] In a skillet, heat a few tablespoons of canola or olive oil on medium heat. Once hot, add the salmon cakes. Cook about 4 minutes per side or until nicely browned.

If your salmon cakes seem dry when mixing, add a tablespoon of milk to help bind them.
See? YUMNESS.

Our fab featured cook [that sounds so spiffy, right?!] recommends asparagus or fresh beans on the side, and if you're feeling fancy, maybe a little remoulade to dip the cakes in.

I can't stand to leave well enough alone when I'm cooking, so I dug around and found a few spice combinations I might try when I make this [because THAT is definitely happening in the very near future] recipe:

- Smoked paprika and thyme
- Lemon pepper
- Garlic Herb rub from Mrs. Dash
- Orange juice and rosemary
- Rosemary and basil
- Parsley
- Tarragon
- Mint

I also hear tell that a certain super easy dijon and dill dip is AHmazing - just mix dijon mustard and dill into sour cream, to taste.

I'm going to stop before I convince myself that a trip to Wal-Mart this VERY SECOND is in order. :)

Oh my goodness, y'all.

If this image doesn't bring back memories for me, I just don't know what could [unless it involves a choir. Or Aussie hair spray. Don't ask.]

I spent the greater part of my leisure time for a few years devoted to the study of all things Sweet Valley Twins. I wasn't allowed to read the high school series, because, have mercy, the thematic elements of BOYFRIENDS AND KISSING AND HIJINKS ENSUING.

No decent preteen girl of my parents' would be caught reading them, so I usually wasn't.

...Caught, that is. ;)

I had to laugh when I found out that Francine Pascal wrote a sequel about Elizabeth and Jessica as late twenty-somethings, aimed at the girls who grew up with the fictional twins.

Let me be very honest and say that, as much as I love fashion, there are some days that I can't be bothered to change out of my pajamas.

And I have bad hair days, too. Trust me. So on the days where I'd rather be in jammies and a 'do rag, cruising through my day like a bum, I try to keep it as casual comfy as possible. That completely explains my love for the little t-shirt dress.

At least, I'd like to think so. ;)

My t-shirt dresses all hit just below the knee - I think it's a height thing, because my big little sister owns several of the same dresses, and they're nigh on indecent without leggings for her. Something to consider, should you care to acquire a few of your own.

Also, I'd like it to be known that I did not, in fact, wear two belts. I wore the skinny leather one. It's longish, so I tuck and wrap the ends over. It works for me.

The S Word.

I've waited for weeks to write about this, simply because it's such a difficult subject to discuss with dignity and also candid honesty. There are highly divided, constantly bickering camps on either side of the line.

Nope, I'm not talking about the Middle East.

I totally had you fooled, though, right? ;)

I was reading the newspaper [once upon a time, of course] and happened across an article by a longtime sex therapist. Normally, articles by s-word therapists aren't of interest to me, but this one had my wheels turning. Not so much in a whir of opinions, surprisingly enough, but in a contemplative loop that still has me thinking.

This author stated that sex isn't sexy anymore - that our world is so filled with references, innuendos, and outright displays of sensuality, people are not only desensitized, but indifferent and uninterested.

All the Christians reading this will nod sagely in agreement, just like I did; we've been aware of the dangers of overexposure to sin. We know the Bible verses about lust leading to sin and sin leading to death [James 1:15] and the stories of mighty people brought to their knees by moving their boundaries an inch to have them suddenly slip away like quicksand [see: King David].

But the article has nothing to do with Christian morals - in fact, it points to Hollywood figures who have publicly renounced sex.

My second thought, after the obvious conclusion that our world is going south in a handbag, was this; well, it could be a good thing that people are turning away from promiscuity, right? The article notes that even teenagers, typically hotbeds of raging hormones, are becoming indifferent to the s-word. [Not the word, but the act, just so we're clear.] We read/see/hear about it in a medicinal, informative or even pornographic way, depending on our lives and circumstances. It's no longer an 'enigmatic, turbulent hybrid' of desire and love and commitment.

It's old news now.

I was raised by a very, VERY old-fashioned mama. One who informed ten-year-old me that sex was when married people 'inserted tab A into slot B' and left it at that. You can imagine how confused and curious I was about what that could possibly mean.

You might also imagine how I have since teased her mercilessly about her oh-so-helpful conversation. ;)

I don't think that erasing the s-word and keeping our children clueless and possibly inventing laser goggles that zap bad words and tawdry references before they cross our vision is the answer. Nor do I think that making light of the act is wise. Ignorance is dangerous and damaging. As leaders, parents, teachers, and mentors in a world steeped in over-the-top indecency, you must be ready to address the next 'rush' or titillating, edgy 'revolution'.

If you're still harping on sex, you're way, way behind.

A friend and youth pastor recently wrote a review of Odd People, an up-and-coming band from LA comprised of 10 skate junkies, all in their late teens. Definitely hotbeds of hormones right there. ;) Their music is wildly popular, and they've caught the attention [and possibly the mega-funded touring platform] of the likes of Lady Gaga. Their lyrics are built around shock value. I quote,

"Murder, rape, torture, necrophilia, misogyny, and any other unspeakable act that pops into their minds is unapologetically addressed by this crew, the majority of which are not yet old enough to legally consume alcohol. Anarchy, nihilism, random acts of violence and destruction, and even nazism (remember, these are black teens) are common themes in much of the groups music."

The boundaries aren't being blurred or nudged. They're disappearing faster than we can repair them. This quote sums up the issue concisely,

"Quite frankly, I don’t know what it says about the world that we don’t already believe. Depraved, depressed, and disturbed. Perhaps Odd Future only serves as a blaring, in our face, primal scream that reminds us that the desperation of the world around us is becoming more and more intense."

We already know the Answer. I hope that we have the wherewithal to respond accordingly.

This is an open letter I wrote after a particularly trying day at my former side job. I never posted it because, well, it's kind of a rant. And that's just mean. ;)

HOWEVER. I firmly believe that people need to know what a 'waiter rant' sounds like, if only to realize how the industry really works and how much of an impact one bad table can have.

Not that any of MY readers are bad tables, naturally. ;)

Dear Guest At Table 320,

I think I speak for all restaurant workers when I say this:

LEARN HOW TO TREAT YOUR SERVER.

This is a nice restaurant. You're using real cloth napkins and wine glasses and your entrees automatically come with a first course. You're going to pay an average of $15 per plate here, and if you choose to drink, bar drinks will cost around $8 each. While you're here, you'll want to try a calorie-laden dessert at an average of $6 each; if you choose to skip it, you've probably already had an appetizer, at an average of $8.

A little simple math brings us to a whopping total of around $60 for two with the frills. Of course, the frills are optional, and every server expects and dreads people who order the cheapest menu items to share or the 'free refill' options and proceed to take full advantage of the opportunity to run the server off of his or her feet trying to keep up with the demand for constant refills.

Oh, we definitely know you, the people who try to 'eat cheap'. Servers all know that this means you're willing to spend when it comes to the food, possibly because you have a gift card you're dying to use, but you're going to leave a paltry tip in the name of 'eating cheap'. Guess what? A $60 meal purchased with a $50 gift card and a $10 bill is STILL A $60 CHECK. Tip on the original amount.

It's simple, really.

And if you don't, whatever you do, please don't brag about how cheaply you got your dinner and return with your friends to demonstrate.

By the way, if you're going to order the 'free refill' side items and consume 4 bowls of soup and 3 salad bowls, you're too cheap. You need to order a real meal. If real meals are too expensive, choose another restaurant. Possibly one with a dollar menu. After all, it's not your server's fault that you really can't afford to be eating here. If you're saving money by tipping less, you're not beating the establishment, you're hurting the server. The company makes a HUGE profit from everything on the menu. The server makes NOTHING aside from the tips his/her guests leave.

Are you just a bad tipper by nature? Your server doesn't sympathize. Servers work EXTREMELY hard for very little money and still manage to tip $10 or more when they eat out. So they're not going to 'understand where you're coming from' nor be impressed with your dollar-stretching skills. Servers work for payment. Tipping is an American dining standard - even if you're from another country, there's no way that you are unaware of your responsibility. And when your server holds up his/her end of the bargain and provides service for you, you need to do your part and pay for that service.

When you don't, you're inducted into the secret hall of shame. Servers remember you. The bad tippers, the perpetual complainers, the arguers, the overspenders with the declined credit cards, and the people who send their plates back to the kitchen - usually half-empty, because apparently, you have to plow through half of your sirloin and two-thirds of your side dishes to decide that your food was bad - every time in an attempt to get free food.

Servers will point you out to coworkers. Staff members might casually stroll by your table, and your previous server will, no doubt, let your current server know about you. Why let them waste their time trying to cater to your every whim? You'll likely stiff them like you've stiffed others. This means that your bad tip just cost your future dining experiences. You're going to get very basic service when you come back here, and nothing more. After all, it's exactly what you've paid for.

Here's the deal. Servers make $2.13 per hour. After taxes and insurance and employers robbing a percentage of servers' 'sales' for 'tip shares', most servers don't see a dime from their paychecks, and in fact, often pay $10-$20 of their tips back to the company because of this shady, greedy 'company policy'.

That means that the only money that servers survive on is what you leave at the end of your dinner.

So it's NOT okay to stuff your face with that $15 meal, demand servant-like attention from your server, complain, insist, question, threaten, ignore, demean, and insult him/her - and then leave a bad tip.

Here's a little etiquette lesson for you. Industry standards for a satisfactory tip begin at 20% of the entire check - that's before coupons, gift cards, or meals comped off of your ticket by the manager - and stipulate that no tip for reasonable service should be less than $5.

Why?

Your server is responsible for preparing salads, soups, bread baskets, drinks, coffee setups, and desserts. Sometimes they'll be required to plate your food or run to the storage rooms for ingredients the cooks need to fill your order. Not only does this take place in record time, usually while you drain your freshly-refilled iced tea and complain, but all of your requests for extra plates, silverware, napkins, and other items are handled by your server, often while he or she is trying to handle extra requests from other tables, too. The server's job doesn't end at your table - a typical 'section' can be 2-6 other tables at a time, or, if a restaurant is short-staffed, half of the restaurant.

The server you insist on running into the ground is also bussing tables, seating other parties, and running hot food to other servers' tables. Every second spent at your table, waiting for you to decide on your dinner, listening to stories about your pet, or answering questions about specials [even though you're holding the menu they're all listed in] is a sacrifice made to enrich your dining experience.

Should you recognize this and find it in your heart to surprise your server with an excellent tip, I can assure you that the entire restaurant will be at your beck and call. Servers will fight to have you in their section. The manager will come by and greet you personally. You might find that your desserts or your drinks have been taken care of for you. Your waiter or waitress will be more than happy to listen to those pet stories. And they'll be happy to make your future dining experiences flawless, too.

Most servers are normal, happy people - when treated with respect, they're thrilled to to return the favor. The kindhearted, generous patrons who make up the small - but popular - minority of a restaurant's guests keep servers from walking away from the industry.

If you decide to ignore the truth and stick it to the man [or woman], you'll find that your server is going to do everything he/she can to get you out of the restaurant and on your not-so-merry way.

It's [probably] nothing personal, it's just business strategy. A new party is a new chance to earn a good tip.

So next time you think you may want to have dinner out, think twice. If you can't afford to tip your waiter generously - or fairly, at the very least - then kindly consider going somewhere else to eat. In fact, I have a friendly suggestion for you; roll through your nearest drive through.

This is a business. Servers are working, just like you, to pay their bills and keep their kids fed and clothed.

Tip well. They're more than happy to let you keep your change.

He's a tremendous husband, really. I don't just say that when we're getting along, either - I honestly look forward to every day with him. We're just THAT CRAZY about each other. ;)

On a side note, whoever coined the phrase 'the honeymoon stage' was crazy. It took us a lot longer than our first week of marriage to get things running like they should.

You don't just jump from being single and connected at the hip to married and entertwined at the heart, I'm just sayin'.

Do you remember the group 'Anointed'?

Or were you, unlike me, not slightly obsessed with choir and gospel music? Because there's a very real possibility that I missed out on pop culture influences due to a whole lot of choir practice.

Anyway, I loved them, I was thrilled when they were featured on Veggie Tales' 'Jonah' because, well, that was the BEST SONG ON THE MOVIE! I jammed. Even when the lyrics turned to the topic of whale digestion.

Sweet nephew Ray and I were browsing the YouTubes the other day and came across the Jonah movie. [yep, in case you didn't know, the whole movie is available on YouTube, so get your fix now!] Since he thoroughly enjoyed the veggie angel choir, I decided to see if he'd be as enamored with the original crew. I'm sad to say that he wasn't quite as engaged, probably because they aren't really animated vegetables [he's a huge fan] but he did a little bebop around the room anyway.

That's my boy.

Yep. I'm no longer a part-part-part-time server on the side.

Studies show that unemployed people are happier than people stuck in dreadful, hateful places of employment with high stress environment and a very low reward factor.

Serving is exactly that kind of scenario, but clearly, no one knew this before Studies said so. Because that would just be UNFOUNDED.

I'm both appalled by what I saw in the industry and worried for the state of ethics in general - but very glad to have my weekends back. :)

That makes this a REALLY HAPPY MONDAY!

In the interest of keeping it really, really real, I have to say this about marriage.

Every union has it's disagreements. D and I had two - TWO - major fights in the year we dated before we married.

And twelve the week after the honeymoon.

It's a completely different scenario when you're bound for life to one another. There's freedom in sharing your most precious, personal opinions and feelings with someone. But sometimes there's a little too much freedom, and it's tempting to fall into the habit of forcing your way onto your honey, because, after all, you're not trying to impress your spouse with your broadmindedness or kind heart. The deed is done. You're hitched now, so you may as well have things your [clearly superior] way.

Right?

Not so much with the rightness.

Even if you don't struggle with the newly-married adjustment process - which I'm totally not buying, because you'd have to be superhuman - you can still get something out of these conflict-reducing phrases I found the other day:

Please try to understand my point of view.
Wait, can I take that back?
You don’t have to solve this—it helps me just to talk to you.

I've been won over.

I heart the Ragamuffin clan - not that we know each other, you understand, but I have a feeling we would get along famously if we did.

Anyway, so I've read the Mr. and the Mrs. via their blogs for awhile now, and they always have the coolest things going on. Like, you know, traveling and moving and repurposing furniture and creating awesome family memories.

And cheese. There's cheese, too.

Heather [since we're on a first name basis and all.. ;)] posted instructions for homemade ricotta cheese [plus some yummy bruschetta, which, YES PLEASE!] that look both easy and completely Rache-like, since I am a FAN OF ALL THINGS CHEESE.

To put it mildly.

Plus, I love using ricotta in my lasagna and it really is expensive to purchase and difficult to find in this little country town of mine.

But milk? We do have us some whole milk around these parts [thanks to hubs winning out the argument - I'm a 2% gal, myself] and buttermilk is pretty easy to find, too.

So now you know. Expect complaints from the fam to follow, because, as all growing boys know, CHEESE AND BREAD IS NOT A MEAL.

They have so much to learn. ;)

Green Things.

Are you green?

I have to say that, as much as I want the best for our planet, I'm not green-minded for eco purposes. I'm all about stretching the budget, and that means a whole of recycling, reusing, and rethinking.

Naturally, I'm all over that - except for giving up my paper towels because a girl's gotta have some luxuries and maybe some clean mirrors and windows, too.

I thought this article about the cost of 'going green' was fascinating, though - I've seen a lot of 'green' ideas that seem to cost much more, both in cold, hard cash and in energy [which, I absolutely believe, equals cold, hard cash in importance] spent.

I try [and sometimes succeed] to approach the issue with a lot of balance and a little skepticism. I'm totally for anything that reduces my energy output, and I do appreciate that our earth is a precious resource from God and we shouldn't abuse it out of our own laziness.

But I also drive an SUV because I live in the country and it's kind of necessary.

Also, I feel like I'm doing a whole lot of good when I reuse my plastic grocery bags as wastebasket liners.

So there, all you judgemental eco-warriors with your designer cloth grocery bags and gas guzzling SUVs. Stick THAT in your cloth grocery bag. ;)

I'd just like to point out that, aside from the ABC song and Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, this song is sweet nephew Ray's fave.

My Valentine's card from sweet hubs plays a clip of the song when the card is opened, and Raiden's favorite thing to do is sneak into our room and steal the card.

Not that he's not easy to find - we just follow the the sounds of Satchmo. He's got this funny little dance involving pretty much nothing except wobbling his head back and forth wildly to go along with it. ;)

I'm inordinately proud of his fine taste in music, you understand.

I'm also happy to say that I know EXACTLY where he gets it from.

Knowledge is power.

And we all know that some people should never be armed with too much power.

Point in case - or is it case in point? - at any rate, here's an interesting article about a study conducted among students who were exposed to a fictional 'endangered tree octopus' information page online - and believed it was real, even after researchers revealed the truth.

Because, of course, they saw it on the internets, so it had to be true. I know people who put far too much faith in the internets at large, and Googles in particular, so it made a lot of sense to me. And not only because it was fun to chuckle at someone ELSE'S gullibility, thankyouverymuch.

It's a scary thought, that anyone with the ability to string words into sentences can sign up for a free blog and feed their own opinions into the information superhighway.

I should know, I'm LIVING PROOF. =)

Ethical bloggers should always, ALWAYS strive to separate opinion from fact. But not every blogger is ethical, and not every blog is maintained by a blogger. It's important to check, re-check, verify, and confirm the information you find online. What may have helped Jane Smith from Yourtown, USA to lose 150 pounds in 6 weeks probably isn't accurate, no matter how high in the Googles hierarchy the 'article' is listed.

It's been a couple of weeks since I last posted, both because I've been insanely busy and because my auto-post feature decided to turn all of my posts into drafts instead of scheduled posts.

I'm in the process of reorganizing and re-editing some of the posts, so you'll see them popping up here and there, because it makes a lot more sense to start from here than to backdate everything and confuse everyone, right?

I AM going to go out on a limb here and say that posts are probably going to be sparse around here for a few more weeks until life slows down just a teensy bit.

Please, Lord, let it be. Because between You and me, work, AND new job hunting, and school, and studying, and family time, and church, and everything between is making me a little batty.

Brrrrr.

It was '21 degrees, feels like 9 degrees' this morning when I headed out, and I can attest to every one of those 9 degrees.

I do love me some winter weather, but I PREFER TO FEEL MY TOES.

I'm not being picky, it's just a preference, you understand.

South Texas is nothing if not prepared, though - in light of the expected continual temperature drop, there has been a rush on the grocery store, schools will be closing at noon, and electric companies have already started staggered blackouts, cutting power for 45 minutes or so to sections in town.

Because THE TEMPERATURE IS DROPPING, and those are logical things to do when it's cold.

Not that I'm complaining. I'll be at home in my jammies if anyone needs me. :)

I'm kind of an IKEA fan.

There. I said it.

My love for all things cheap and Swedish is expansive... And expensive, because furniture adds up when you can't seem to stay away from the IKEA store.

I'm not going to lie - I do love me some furniture displays. I can wander around IKEA for hours, much to my husband and sister's dismay - it's fascinating and wonderful and inspiring and CHEAP!

It's definitely not a quick trip stop, though. If you've been to an IKEA, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. It sucks you in with pretty doodads and cheap furniture, and oh, the endless possibilities!

So to be fair, I have to point out that my multiple-hour shopping trips to IKEA [and subsequent ish-ahs packing multiple pieces of furniture into my car] are partially my fault. I have an admitted home decor obsession, and it would just be rude not to admit that.

BUT.

Those stores are like a stinking maze. And heaven help you if you have kids in tow [or, you know, unwilling family members] and aren't interested in leaving them in the childcare room [unwilling family members aren't accepted in the kids room - I checked], because they WILL have to go to the bathroom. And you WON'T be able to find a way to get there without tracking down one of the elusive white elephants, also known as IKEA employees, to navigate the aisles and sections and back alleys to get you there.

It's criminal. The layout is dreadful in terms of efficiency for the customer's sake. And I'm not the only one to notice this, either - I found this article about their merchandising tactics. Totally true story.

And all I have to say about that is AMEN.

I'm a little off my game, though, since I've had The Crud for a few days now. Nothing major enough to run to the doctor for, only just major enough to make me want to down a double dose of Nyquil and hunker down with my fleece blanket.

You can understand how tempting that is just from reading it, can't you?

I'm also tempted to wear nose plugs to class tonight, because the thought of being That One Sniffler in the quiet classroom [it IS statistics, afer all - there's not a lot of noise in a subject like that] is something akin to a Greek tragedy.

However, as Gene Krantz allegedly said on Apollo 13, FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.

What Would You Do?

I read the original blog post that spawned a movement, an outcry, and the above book, and suffice to say, I was neither swayed nor impressed with the 'openmindedness' [because, um, SPINELESS much?] of the parents in this situation.

This has nothing to do with me, of course, being childless and female, but the subject came up when sweet nephew Ray, two years old, grabbed his aunt's headband and proclaimed himself to be "a beautiful princess".

You can imagine how quickly his uncle D set him straight.

I'm a firm believer in parental responsibility - children need and deserve to be taught right from wrong, yes from no, and acceptable from unacceptable.

And neglecting to guide one's child into the yeses and nos of life is pure shame.

It's not okay. It's not normal. And there are definitely no heroes in that situation. But it IS something to consider as we plan for our own future children, because a world where lines are blurred to the point of complete reversal of basic morality is a scary place to raise a kid!

It's sad that correcting a child in love could be considered a BAD thing. Sad is exactly what sweet Ray wasn't when we took the headband away.

Come to find out, he's cool with being a handsome prince, 'cause that one comes with a sword.

Doesn't she look confident in her grooming abilities, y'all? Whoever this gal is, she's got it going on.

Unlike me.

Because I have just had one of the most traumatizing eyebrow experiences in my life.

And I'm only being dramatic just a teensy-tiny bit.

Just so you know where I stand.

I feel confident that you'll understand just how traumatizing this is to me, even though I should have known from the start that something was amiss; after all, one can't expect delicacy and precision from a woman who can't speak English and charges $3 to wax eyebrows.

But I wasn't prepared to have chunks of skin ripped from around my eyebrows and upper lip, and I definitely never expected that I'd be paying a total of $20 for the pleasure.

Yep. Not only am I missing patches of facial skin, I am a sucker. I still tipped her, even as my face swelled up, bled, and wept a little.

My own real blood and everything.

I'm pretty much convinced never to go back to this woman, but there's no one in town that threads [my first choice for eyebrows] and, you know, this facial hair situation MUST be kept under control.

SO.

Right now I'm using a heavy-duty concealer and praying for divine healing. But I'm considering investing in some eyebrow guides and industrial tweezers and having a go at my own eyebrows.

Confessions Of A Procrastinator.

I have something to admit to the world.

I HATE UNDOING.
This applies to almost every situation that requires backtracking, and it's probably indicative of a larger issue that I don't care to explore, but it's true.

Did you forget something vitally important at the house we just left 10 minutes ago? You'll be fine. No, really. I'm not turning around, you WILL WEAR MISMATCHED SHOES to the ball, Cinderella.

What? Unpack my suitcase from last week's trip? Let me empty it out my own way, day by day, as I slowly wear my way through the pile of clothes I didn't really need to take, in the first place. THEN I'll put the suitcase up.

And undecorating? That's the worst of all, especially in regards to Christmas decorations.

I'm not afraid to admit that it strikes a little fear and nausea deep within me.

That's why I'm SO GLAD that my precious Mom so generously agreed to take apart all the holiday decor at our house last week.

Why was our Christmas decor still up last week, you ask? Well, it's simple, really. We like the ambience. And also, Christmas is only 11 months away. So we're early, if you think about it.

And I might have considered sticking some hearts on it and calling it a Valentine's tree.

As you may have noticed, my loathing for undoing anything I've started runs deep.

We're lucky to have my Mama, because I was really starting to lean toward the hearts.

Tax Away! ..Literally, Take Them AWAY!

You know you're starting your week out right when you're thinking about income tax, right?

Or maybe not so much. I mean, the deadline for W2s to be sent out is rushing at us like a freight train in the country [because we all know that trains move at a snail's pace when they're actually, you know, blocking a ROAD or something], but a good majority of America will probably try to ignore that chore until April 15th.

Because we're still paying for Christmas, yo.

I hate paying taxes. I hate that I have no say over the money I work very hard for. I hate that taxes are constantly increasing.

But I DO love me some tax refunds, and even though I was self-employed last year, I'm hoping we can qualify for a little something something this year. Without kids to claim as dependents, our chances of making any money around tax time are slim, but still, a girl can dream.

That's why I'm keeping an eye out. Not exactly anxiously, because 'anxiously awaiting' implies an action like, oh, say, organizing all of my paperwork in preparation, but still, I'm mildly excited.
*ahem*

To be fair, I'm also very busy consulting Googles about tax refunds. So far I've got this article on tax deductions, but be assured, I'm very thorough with my mouse and keyboard. As long as I can sit here and conduct such clearly important research, I totally will. ;)

Anyone else an early filer? Or do you hang on until April to send in your forms?

To my awesome Mama.

January is just bursting with reasons to celebrate in our family, and I don't mind at all, because it keeps the holiday fun alive and it's a great excuse to go after-Christmas shopping. ;)

There are a lot more reasons to celebrate my Mom than shopping, though, even at 80% off. ;) She's one of the kindest people you'll ever meet, if you meet her, which I highly recommend, and she has a heart big enough to love everyone she comes into contact with, a left hook strong enough to keep us in line [just kidding, Mom, really! ;)], and a beautiful, gracious soul. She leaves her mark on everyone who knows her.

We could all learn a lot from her, I'm just sayin'.

New Year's Goals..

I can't take credit for the shot [after all, there's no wonky flash issues and lopped-off appendages] but I love the style of this photo from KLP in Chicago. One of my goals for 2011 is to have photos done of D and I. When we married, the opportunity for a shoot with a professional wasn't available, and while my little sis and I did a pretty good job [if I do say so myself] with our wedding pictures, I want us to have a couples shoot to celebrate our lives together.

Yep. It's sappy and unnecessary. But it's ON MY LIST.

And of course, that makes it a real, live goal. ;)

I'm trying to convince D to take me to Chicago so I can book with this fabulous photographer. Kristen La Voie does awesome work, and Chicago is FULL of great places to photograph. Except for being a city that is not at all significant to either one of us, it's, you know, PERFECT.

Which probably means it's not a good idea.

Still, I'm totally working the angle. ;)

I'm not gonna lie, picture taking is a GREAT motivator to lose this extra weight I'm carrying around, too. After all, they say the camera adds 50 pounds [it's 50, right? it has to be!] and these hips don't need any additions. ;)

I'm enrolling in classes this week to knock out the last few credits I need to complete my degree... FINALLY! I've been working on this BA for 8 years.

EIGHT STINKING YEARS. Spent working on the same degree.

There aren't enough words to describe how slackerish that makes me sound - and feel!

The good thing is that I'm still hanging in there, though. I'm on track to enroll in MBA boot camp [because my current major is Psychology and I'm switching to a Business major, I have some catching up to do before I jump into the MBA program] and I'm excited to be working towards my goal again.

Now if I could only find Ann Frank folders and My Little Pony pencils, this back-to-school thing would feel just about right. ;)

I have a diet resolution every year, I'm not gonna lie. Ever since I gained a small child's worth of excess a few years ago, dieting has been a come-and-go companion in my life.

I'm really, really sad to say that although I'd banished the fat kid, a steady diet of McDonald's and Taco Bell during the past year or so brought the excess back with a vengeance.

I'm thinking I'd like for my husband to get to see me at my normal, healthy weight before I go and swell up with babies down the road [no, not anytime soon! I'm just forecasting, y'all], and I'm very, very impressed with what Weight Watchers, a personal trainer, and a chef did for Jennifer Hudson.

The last two are a little bit beyond my reach as a normal person, but I can probably swing a WW membership. So I'm thinking about it.

Just like I'm thinking about the 2,341 other things on my resolutions list, because I am nothing if not ambitious and organized in my fictional goals.

I mean - snorkel the great barrier reef? I CAN BARELY SWIM.

Someday.

In the meantime, although I'd really like to consider revisiting #1,147 [make a perfect cheesecake, which, CHECK, that happened!] I should probably focus on the weight loss goal again.

Here it goes. AGAIN.

31 Bits.

You may have noticed a trend in my shopping habits.

I mean, goodness knows I talk about shopping enough, right?

I am a sucker for a gift with a cause, and I love nothing more than to contribute to an organization doing good in the world. I have a deep-seated thankfulness for everything I've been given, and if I may be very candid, I know what it's like to go without some things.

I'm blessed, and I've never been forsaken, but that doesn't mean I've always been able to stretch my pennies quite far enough to cover my basic needs, like, you know, toilet paper and tuna.

And that is just another story of how an awesome God and some incredibly kind parents saved my skin.

But back to the shopping.

I found this company, 31 bits designs, and fell a little in love with their beautiful jewelry collection. And it's made of recycled paper beads! Gorgeous.

Not everyone is into the accessories, even though some of the bracelets would be FAB watches - and I respect that - but if you ARE, these are pretty much amazing pieces to consider, I'm just sayin'.

On this day, 21 years ago, a chubby, squalling baby girl came into the world a little earlier than anyone expected, and for the little family waiting for her, she was the most perfect gift we could ever have hoped for.

She's grown into a lovely young woman - without an ounce of that extra chub she brought into the world with her, bless her skinny heart - and she has such a beautiful personality, too. She's fiercely loyal, generous to a fault, and she has a kind smile for everyone - and a penchant for collecting friends like some people collect shells or beanie babies or, you know, old receipts for no apparent reason.

Because we don't know anyone that does THAT.

She also happens to be my best friend and closest confidant - and sometimes, my partner in crime. ;)

Is anyone else as fascinated by extreme weight loss as me?

I mean, it's probably borne of a soul deep knowledge that I have extreme weight to lose, myself, but to be fair, the work that goes into a weight loss campaign like this is nothing to jump into lightly.

Which is why I'm taking so much time considering it. ;)

I love watching The Biggest Loser, though, because I'm all about the underdog, and if trying to lose hundreds of pounds doesn't make a person an underdog, I just don't know what possibly could.

Dress Code Gone Too Far.

I am almost speechless.

And we know that doesn't happen often!

I've posted before about my utter disdain for women who reveal their bodies in tight, inappropriate outfits and then complain when men notice them or single them out as 'easy'.

But this dress code? It's a little intense. I believe that boundaries are good, and a dress code is perfectly acceptable to me. But when a company regulates undergarments and hair dye and tie patterns, I think the line has been crossed.

Why is it that this crazy world we live in can't find a balance between the two extremes? I know in my heart of hearts it's because so many people lack an anchor in Jesus - but common sense might lead one to expect a little bit of reason among all these regulations and public movements and lawsuits and law books.

I'm just sayin'.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm still in a little bit of a food coma, thanks to the awesome spread at the family table this year, but I opened up my facebook to a whole list of game requests [bored much over the holidays, friends?] and it made me pause and wonder if I'm the only one with THE SICKNESS.

The SICKNESS goes like this - first, a slight twinge of discomfort at the mention of yet another game. Then, a full blown grump attack as another invitation is sent from a randomly generated list by a friend who has NEVER seen me play an internet game of ANY sort.

Yeah. It's a little bit intense.

I despise video games and internet games and facebook farms and jungles and stores and cities. They irritate me with their pointlessness and marked ability to waste enormous amounts of time. I have enough procrastination in my blood to waste time all by myself, y'all. I do NOT need a video game addiction to make matters worse.

Also, I have very little patience for levels and phases and things, so there's that, too.

Am I the only one with this sickness? Or is it normal to have such strong feelings about a user-operated apparatus?

Juxtaposition is my thing. I love a little bit of the unexpected, like torn, baggy jeans with a snug sweater and fierce heels.

This is where the tour bus stops, because I haven't gotten around to taking pictures of the bedroom or the office, even though they've been through the spiffing up process, too.

It just so happens that there are stacks of packed items and not so much room for the picture taking in those particular areas, that's all.

I'm going to save those rooms for a later date - preferably one where the aforementioned stacks have been banished.

Where We Live - Day 4

This is the room where magic happens.

No, not the bedroom, naughty!

It's the kitchen, and it's definitely the heart of our home. There is always someone in here, whipping something up.

It's kind of nice to have all these people who know how to cook hanging around, you know?
We went with a bright, retro theme. In retrospect [pun intended] I probably wouldn't choose such a bright, saturated color for the walls, but for this little farm kitchen, it just works. =)

Folks, we have here an average, cheapo fridge. Nothing fancy, but it boasts an icemaker and plenty of room for pickles, so it does the job for us just fine. ;)

The biggest challenge with such an old house is the lack of cabinet space. We don't have the cash lying around to invest in a total kitchen redo, so we used furniture to supplement the cabinetry we do have - hence the small counter between the stove and 'fridge.

The two candle holders were made for my first house away from home and family - they're spoons I raided from my mom's collection and bent to hold candles. Their fork counterpart is in the laundry area, serving as an apron hook. ;)

The hood vent doubles as pot and pan storage. It works for us.

To the right of the sink, our food cabinet. The back of the cabinet is painted red with white circle designs freehanded onto it. Whimsical, I say!

We decided on cheap-o counter paint instead of new counters. Ultimately, this house is a long-term rental, so anything we put into it, although we have a sweet deal with the landowners, doesn't benefit us in the long run. So there are cosmetic changes we're only willing to go so far for, and the counter tops suffered in the process. I don't think they minded too much, though, with their shiny new coat of food-safe, high-temperature paint.

The left of the sink [the sink is directly under the window]. This cabinet holds our everyday dishes, which, coincidentally, are our fancy dishes, too.

The snowman is a Christmas countdown chalkboard, and the plant is D's famous love bamboo, catching some sun. [It usually chills on the desk in the office, but happened to be in the kitchen? Someone was taking care of his love plant again, I'm just sayin'.]

This is actually an older photo of the island [from a cupcake decorating day with the nephews, in case you're wondering about all that sugar happening] so don't mind the dishwashing accoutrements. They're supposed to be in the cabinet below the big farmhouse sink, but clearly, that doesn't happen often. ;) You can see the usual window treatment, the 'it's all good' sign, from here, too. We chose to skip curtains on this window as well as the bathroom because it's at the back of the house. We have no neighbors [except for the cows] back there, and we love that it lets the sunshine in.

Plus, the view is awesome - it's a gently rolling hill for as far as you can see, and it looks so pretty in the mornings with the mist hanging over it.

I know. Sappy.

The lower cabinets hold baking supplies, tupperware, and cleaning supplies, and my dad installed big, deep drawers inside them for easy access.

He also built the island using a plan from Ana White's Knock Off Wood, and even though it was a little pricey for our cheapskate budget, it was still WAY cheaper than purchasing one. And we LOVE it.

IN ALL CAPS.

This is the other side of the Coleman heater in the living room. It heats on both sides, which is nice - and it does still work, which is also nice in a house with no central air or heat installed. It just looks kind of ugly. ;)

The 'laundry area' is really just a part of the kitchen - there's no division except for half walls and an extra wide doorway just like the one in the living/dining area. So it's nice that my sewing mama made a custom ironing board cover to match the mats on all my framed vintage ads and custom towels and potholders.

It's the little things that say I'm a terrible still life photographer.

The flowers are native to Texas and they're actually in two metal containers that have been butted together. They're made to hang on the wall and used to make me really homesick when I lived out of state and missed the wildflowers back home. =)

Yep, we have messy shelves, too. This one holds all our laundry supplies [we have some sensitive skin situations, so we have multiple detergents going on here] and ironed work uniforms for dear sister and I - which we hate, I might add.

It's bright and in-your-face and a little cramped, but it's homey and happy and worlds away from the previous versions.

Gotta love what a little paint and a lot of elbow grease can do, that's all I'm sayin'!

Where We Live - Day 3.

Hey, you're here!

That means I haven't scared you away yet, a fact that makes me both happy and a little relieved. ;) But then again, you haven't seen the rest of the story.

Cue evil laugh here. ;)

No house tour would be complete without seeing the necessary rooms, right?

I mean, after all, this series of posts is all about full disclosure. =)

This is the main bathroom:

The claw foot bathtub is one of the reasons to love old houses. We added a shower kit to ours to make it more user-friendly [we're not long on patience, so showers are more our thing] and LOVE IT.

The throne. Nothin' to see here, just your average bathroom necessity. The only difference with ours is the stainless steel plate it sits on, but that's more for support [thin floors and a raised-block foundation necessitate extra fortification for everything heavy] than style.

And the requisite bath and body works candle, because a girl's gotta have her fragrance. ;)

The bathroom has a nice big linen closet - love the quirks of old houses!

We haven't decided what to do with the mirror yet - it's builder grade and hides a medicine chest behind it, which we really need for the storage. For now, it stays like it is.

Plain, builder-grade vanity. We put this in to replace the old wall-mounted sink. We definitely needed the storage, so this vanity was a great choice.

Laundry basket - it's small, so it fills up really quickly, trust me!

The windowsill usually holds bud vases and gerbera daisies, but right now it's sporting a snow man and silvery berry sprig. We frosted the window for privacy without sacrificing light, and I love the clean, simple look of an unadorned window, too.

On to the hallway outside the bathroom...

This is the view from the laundry area in the kitchen. The doorway directly ahead leads to the second bedroom, the one on the left is an open doorway leading to the living room, and the bathroom is to the right.

This console table belongs in the living room under the vogue poster, but we relocated it here for the holidays. Thankfully, the hallway is really wide, so it doesn't affect our walking space.

The big frame on the wall is supposed to have our wedding pictures in it, but, um.. It doesn't. Yet. =)

Only one guest so far has asked if we 'know those people' pictured in the frames.

On the left of the bathroom doorway is a monochromatic painting I did years ago. I wanted to see if I could paint, so I tried it. Not great by any means, but it works!

This is the painting to the right of the bathroom doorway. It's the second in my 'let's try this painting thing' set.

There you have it. Some of the most used areas in our home. ;) And trust me, with our love of sweet tea, it's a distinct possibility that you'll see these areas should you ever come to visit.

I'm just sayin'.

Where We Live - Day 2.

I hope you're ready for the longest post in history.

For real. 'Cause here it goes!

Welcome to our living and dining area. Because the house is cosy [that's a really nice way of saying that it's SO small!] we use every square inch on a daily basis.

Some of us also clean every square inch on a daily basis.

Ahem.

We don't have an entryway - we're not fancy like that because the farming family that built the house from a one-room cabin back in the 19th century wasn't fancy like that - so the living room is the first stop.

The living room as viewed from the dining room. These rooms are connected by a double doorway. Like french doors without the doors. Or hinges. Or anything except the doorway, so maybe it's just a doorway. ;)

The Christmas tree! We had to do some serious rearrangement to fit the tree in - a console table was moved into the hallway and the hallway bench was moved into the dining room. It was a holiday puzzle of sorts.

Coincidentally, we've discovered that we like having a bench at the dining room table for the expanded seating options, so there's no telling how long we'll hang onto our Christmas look now!

The vogue print behind the tree is a print of a cover from the 1940s. My decor relies heavily on vintage magazines, which I didn't plan, but kind of love, anyway.

My dad made the frame especially for the print when I moved to Florida. :)

My armoire - I love this thing, but it is massive. Seriously, the photos don't do it justice. It looks tame, right? A docile little piece that just does it's job without harming anyone.

Except that it's the heaviest piece of furniture I've ever owned. Unless you count my bed with EVERYONE IN THE FAMILY piled on top. It's that kind of heavy. Which is why I don't rearrange this room. It's impossible to move this baby at whim.

It holds our big tv [we love us some spurs games, I'm not going to lie] and a huge assortment of dvds, games, and stashed art supplies. Oh, and also my treasured boom box from 1999.

The 'be happy' sign has graced all of my houses, and it currently hangs out on top of the armoire. The carolers and greenery are for holiday flair, though. ;)

These are the chairs that hang out to the left and right of the armoire. They're 'slipper chairs' because they're low and long. They're easy for the kiddos to climb into and really, really comfy thanks to the long seats and extra padding. I ordered them sight-unseen online and couldn't be happier that the swirls in the print match the sofa.

The toy box is for the nephews, hence the soldier hats and megaphones.

What I don't love? The vintage coleman wall heater. I'd love to refurbish it but we haven't had the time, plus, it's kind of a big deal to properly refurbish a gas heater.

Oh, and those bags of Christmas lights are actually lighted garland that was meant to be hung above the arch and on the porch, but in the interest of full disclosure, that SO hasn't happened.

Oops.

The sofa is a butter yellow microsuede, and as much as I love it [because OH MY WORD, the comfort is unparalleled!], it doesn't really photograph well, thanks to little hands and feet constantly running over it in every direction. In defense of the poor guy, it looks a lot better in real life because you can't see all the ways the grain has been rubbed without a camera flash.

Oops again.

These pillows are for Christmas - I'm a big fan of the throw pillow as an institution, and besides, who doesn't love singing snowmen?

If you keep walking a few steps [just a few, I promise!] you'll be in the middle of the dining room. This room used to be known as 'the school room' and held multiple desks and computers and bookshelves. The kitchen is roomy enough to fit a table and chairs, so it wasn't a problem - until I convinced my handy dandy dad to build a custom island for the kitchen. It's been the key factor in reconfiguring how we use the rooms - and it relegated the major eating back to the dining room where it belongs. ;)

I know. NOW we're getting classy, right?

My 'plate collection' - it's metal wall art that I had originally planned to replicate with garage sale plates and painstaking arrangement - until my mom and I found this piece on sale. SCORE one for easy decor!

The buffet all ready for Christmas. This was taken before the cards started pouring in - the top of the buffet is full of holiday well wishes now. It makes us happy to see all of the notes from our friends and family! The vase and peonies stay all year long, but the ornament filler is strictly holiday, as are the stockings.

Buffet detail - right side. The stockings are made from vintage quilts and the snowmen are actually floral picks. Talk about using what you have on hand! The ornaments are dollar store and the nostalgic french horn wreath was made by my mom years ago. It's a look I like to call 'eclectic'. I should probably call it 'storage shed special', because that's a little more accurate. ;)

Buffet detail - left side. My mom's violin from middle school stays displayed in it's case against the buffet. It's sentimental AND a conversation piece! =)

The reason these photos didn't turn out very well - bad lighting thanks to these lovely floor-length raw silk drapes.

Table detail. It's survived a lot, this little table. We've discovered that we can seat 8 around it - it's meant for 4! The candle and bowl are always there, with a little flair depending on the time of year [It just had pumpkins in it for Thanksgiving]. I'm kind of a fan of bath and body works' candles, you'll notice.

This is a peek at the bench that we temporarily relocated here. It's usually in the hallway, and it's where we perch when there's a line for the bathroom, usually to holler at the person holding up the line. ;) But the seating options with a bench in the dining room are pretty nice, so a bench that fits into the dining room decor may be in our future.

Just so everyone knows where I stand.

Left corner! I found these extra chairs years later than my original purchase of the dining set. For $35 each. Why yes, yes I DID jump on that like a hot fried potato. They're a slightly different color than the originals, but not enough to convince me to strip and re-stain them. ;)

Just bein' honest here.

With the 6 chairs and bench, we have a pretty full table. But we like it that way.

Room with a view - this was taken near the buffet, looking toward the living room. You can see how small the place is in this shot, although, to be fair, the angle of the photographer [no names here, people, don't incriminate me!] makes it look a little smaller.

But it works well for us. =)
